When Spain was at the height of its political power in the mid 16th century, it had very few artists who could compete as equals with their counterparts in Italy, France and Germany. Yet, within a generation Spain could claim an artistic tradition which included some of the greatest names in the history of art – El Greco, Jusepe Ribera, Francisco Zurbaran, Diego Velasquez, Francisco Goya, Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso. This course will trace the history of Spanish art through these and other artists and will include comparative examples of architecture and decorative art in the different periods.
