This course will study a number of adaptations of Graham Greene’s work, including acknowledged screen classics such as ‘The Third Man’ (1949) and ‘The Fallen Idol’ (1948) and lesser-known works such as ‘Across the Bridge’ (1957) and ‘the Tenth Man’ (1989). Why does Greene’s work seem to lend itself to screen treatment and what makes a good adaptation? How well do the films stand up on their own? In addressing these questions, the course will include film and recording of Greene himself talking about his work for the cinema.
